This is a must have book for shortwave hobbyist

If you are into old shortwave radios this is the book for you. It has tons of technical information on 100s of radios. It even gives you the original cost of the radio and expected prices (at the time of the publication of the book). The author is well know for his great books in this hobby including amateur radio. The is a new version of this book. I don't have the newer version but I would guess that the newer version including everything in this book and information about newer radios. It recently did a review of this book on my YouTube channel (hamrad88) which will give some details of what is in the book. This is a must have book for shortwave hobbyist.

If you love old radios, this book is a must

Most of you who are looking for this book already know that it has become difficult to find since it has gone out of print. Be careful, as there are two versions. This 1942-1997 version is 473 pages long. The 1945-1996 version is usually less expensive, but is only 351 pages long. I would rather spend the extra money to get the more complete book. The information in this book will entertain and enlighten you for hours on end, day after day! Highly recommended! I might buy a few more of these for gifts becfore they disappear completely from the market!

An EXCELLENT reference volume

Fred has done an excellent job of cataloging a wide range of shortwave receivers from the early WWII "boat anchors" up through the modern integrated-circuit PLL synthesized high performance radios of the 1990s. He not only covers the usual radios such as Collins, Drake and National but also the more obscure like the beautiful Gelosos from Italy (I DROOLED over those in catalogs in the '50s).

I guarantee you this book will raise your appreciation for the radios created by the gifted engineers (and the "dogs" created by some NOT so gifted ones) - these wonderful devices not only entertain and educate us but help save lives at sea and keep our conuntries safe.

RECOMMEND FOR ALL PEOPLE!!

At first I felt weird about buying this for my kindle, because there were no reviews and I thought that if I bought it, something will go wrong.. cant quiet explain it. BUT! Im 15 and i love to read young adult thrilling-like book. especially this one! 2 days ago, i pretty much spent all day reading this! since they didn't have EVERLOST in for the kindle.. i got the skinjacker trilogy. I was AMAZED by this book! I LOVE IT! i recommend this book for everyone, especially to teenagers! this trilogy will make you laugh,cry a little,bring out your love,scared, and EVERYTHING! theres a lot of love going on which makes it so good and hurt because of a lil sumtin sumtin(; I dont want to ruin it for u! Im trying to explain a lot of things in better form for you but i cant! its hard! but this book is something you will never regret buying! oh! and i just finished this trilogy today! yeah! like 10 mins ago! it only took me like 1-2 weeks to finally finish this! BEST! Ive also read THE MAZE RUNNER (1,2) UNWIND,TALES OF THE MADMAN UNDERGROUND, IN THE PATH OF FALLING OBJECTS,THE HUNGER GAMES (1,2,3)! ive read all these, this summer! yes, i hang with friends in all but i stay up at night alot too(: dont have a job, so i have time(: no school, A LOT of time(: i recommend these books if you like THE SKINJACKER TRILOGY! It's a little science and history geek-y, and whole lot of imagination.

Since I had read the Unwind Dystology before this, the cycle of "death-rebirth-second death-restoratio-and so on and so forth" rings familiar, but nonetheless in a different way.

At the end of the day, the same things that give life meaning prevail - and these are, purpose, love, and acknowledgment of the Almighty.

I actually got my 8- and 9-yo's to start this series - so I can recommend this to middle-grade kids, provided that parents are there to discuss any questions that may arise. This is definitely thought-provoking, book essay-type material.

The Devil's Arithmetic

I absolutely love this book. It is very sad, though, because you have to relive the Holocaust with the characters. Both the granddad and aunt survived the Holocaust with the loss of almost their whole family. The girl Hannah - which in Hebrew is Chaya - is invited to enjoy the festivities of Passover where Hannah's family also relived the horrid things that happened in the concentration camps/death camps. After Hannah opens the door to let the prophet Elijah in, she is in an alternate world! This is a great book because it has things that have most certainly happened, but the author adds a little twist to the book. This makes The Devil's Arithmetic very intriguing and gives a lot of suspense. I like it because it makes you think twice about what people have gone through. To conclude my review, I would like to say that this is a very good book, and I recommend it to anyone!

This book was givent to my daughter by my boss. She is a teacher and he thought it would be a good book to read to the children. It is a book about a Jewish-American girl who learns about her family and the holocaust. My heart is heavy when I read about such horrible times. History is such an important thing to install in our children.

I read this book when I was in the 7th grade and it sparked my interest in the Holocaust. I think it's a great book for middle schoolers to read to introduce them to the past and the seriousness of the Holocaust. I would recommend this book to anyone.

One of the best Famous Five Sequels

Many readers consider "Smuggler's Top" the best in the Famous Five series of books, but you should read them in chronological to enhance the pleasure.

"Five on a Treasure Island" is vol. 1, "Five go adventuring again" vol. 2 (one of the few FF books that take place in the winter time), "Five run away together" (equally exciting as vol. 1 and 2) is vol. 3 and vol. 4 is "Five go to Smuggler's Top".

It takes place in a very old British town surrounded by dangerous moors and with an old town wall. There are secret passages and this book gets even more thrilling than some of the other Famous Five books.

Other very good sequels are "Five on Kirrin Island again", "Five fall into Adventure", "Five on a Hike together" and "Five on a Secret Trail" (one of my favorites).

Make sure to order an edition that contains the great illustrations by Eileen Soper (too bad that amazon does not give this information).

A fine story, but numerous scanning errors

My daughter and I have been working our way through all the Enid Blyton books. She loves them, but the actual text itself is fairly poor quality. It was obviously scanned in from the paper books, and no-one has bothered to go through and correct all the typos introduced in the process. So, for example, the dog Timmy ends up as "Jimmy" for pages at a time.

Loved It!

I read these books when I was 8-10 yrs with my best friend. I absolutely LOVED these books! Enid Blyton is a great kids' author and the Famous Five was very engaging! I'd recommend these for kids between ages 8-12.

Limited interest for US readers

10 years is a long time in high technology, and alarms sytems are based on high technology. So this book is now of mainly historical interest and for background reading.
Compounding this issue for non-UK residents, is the fact that the book was written in the UK, by a UK engineer about UK alarm sytems. These differ quite significantly from those used in the USA. There are different regulatory standards and quite different customs and practices.
When published, the book was an exceptionally useful volume and it highlighted for me the mystery of why there was no equivalent in the USA, nor is there today. Mr. Cumming should update his book and someone in the US should take it as a model for a book about US alarm systems.

This textbook is very well composed, pretty complete and easy to work with. I particularly liked the part dedicated to historical linguistics and phonetics, although it is a little bit centralised on the AmE. Anyway, overall it is highly recommendable.

Rocky start, but pulled through!

This is one of my all-time favorite series, even tho a few of the most recent additions have been slight misses for me. The beginning of this one had me worried it, too, would be a miss. The first 30% or so seemed very slow to me, or maybe cluttered is a better word. Sarita & Domitian spend a LOT of time in their heads or describing things that just seemed like filler.

If you start to feel that way, PUSH THROUGH. There's a point where it feels like a switch is flipped & suddenly I was flipping pages & highly engrossed in the story. On a relationship level, Sarita & Domitian start to really get to know each other (and have lots of amazing lifemate sex, of course). The supporting characters we meet are well done & interesting (and PLEASE tell me Thorne is going to get a book, because I need more Thorne in my life! NEED!). We also get to hang out w/ some of our favorite Immortals for a bit. And there's some super fun Lucian time, as well. *grin*

So, overall this one's a win for me. The last few chapters especially felt like old school Argeneau land, and that's a place I always love to visit. : )

I love this series and this was a good book but out of all of them which I have read this one is not one of my favorites. That doesn't mean it's not good because it is and it takes the whole series storyline farther along, it is just that I have a few favorites I gave five stars too... ok more than a few lol. What I really liked was we got to find out finally what happened to all the immortals that had Ben kidnapped and what they went thru
Oh but that's not the end of this storyline! I cantata more or I'd ruin it but we do find the kidnapped finally. Now though I can not wait to see where this goes which I hope will be in the next one. One thing I was happy about is there wasn't too much sex in this one. Well of course we find out how this couple get to gather and all that but she doesn't go into details to much and they rant doing it all the time they the book like in some of the stories. I do like a few good sex scenes in a storyline but I also like more plot and more than sex happening. This book has that. Anyways read this one fast and stayed up way past my bedtime reading. It really was a good story but I guess I'm getting more picky. If you like this series you should like this and you have to read it to see what happens with the kidnappings.

I Want This Series To Be As Good As It Used To Be

I have read every one of these books and while this one was better than many of the recent ones, it was not the addicting funny story we used to get in this series. It was not bad, it was just not good, it was poor in comparison to those first 5-6 books in the series. I will keep reading since there are some unfinished things that I want to see how it plays out but the humor and romance was pretty much missing. I think the problem is that it was a pretty good "adventure" type book but that is NOT why we buy this series, we want that humor and quirky romance. It was not here sadly

The couple of Sarita and Domitian was good but the romance was almost missing I felt. The story was told with glacial slowness I felt and if I did not love this series so much I may not have finished it at one point BUT it does end up pretty nicely if rushed in comparison to the rest of the book.

Bottom Line: The story kept your attention for most but not all of the book. The mad scientist thing is really old but done well enough. The humor and romance that used to be the mark of this series was almost nonexistent. I started to give it 4 Stars but dropped it to 3 after considering all the things that we did not get to see in this book. 3 almost 4 Stars.

The American political reformer Herbert Croly wrote, "For better or worse, democracy cannot be disentangled from an aspiration toward human perfectibility." Democratic Faith is at once a trenchant analysis and a powerful critique of this underlying assumption that informs democratic theory. Patrick Deneen argues that among democracy's most ardent supporters there is an oft-expressed belief in the need to "transform" human beings in order to reconcile the sometimes disappointing reality of human self-interest with the democratic ideal of selfless commitment. This "transformative impulse" is frequently couched in religious language, such as the need for political "redemption." This is all the more striking given the frequent accompanying condemnation of traditional religious belief that informs the "democratic faith."

At the same time, because so often this democratic ideal fails to materialize, democratic faith is often subject to a particularly intense form of disappointment. A mutually reinforcing cycle of faith and disillusionment is frequently exhibited by those who profess a democratic faith--in effect imperiling democratic commitments due to the cynicism of its most fervent erstwhile supporters.

Deneen argues that democracy is ill-served by such faith. Instead, he proposes a form of "democratic realism" that recognizes democracy not as a regime with aspirations to perfection, but that justifies democracy as the regime most appropriate for imperfect humans. If democratic faith aspires to transformation, democratic realism insists on the central importance of humility, hope, and charity.

Patrick Deneen is Associate Professor of Government and the inaugural Markos and Eleni Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis Chair of Hellenic Studies at Georgetown University. He has also taught at Princeton University. He is the author of The Odyssey of Political Theory and a number of articles on ancient and American political thought.

If it's not obvious, the preceding review is not a review

Patrick Deneen has many remarkable insights about the illusory nature of democracy in this book, one another reviewer (not the dyspeptic Mr. Fuchs) mentions in the same breath with the work of Hannah Arendt. Deneen has the temerity to reflect critically on democracy as an ersatz religion, which is possibly what Amazon reviewer Mr. Fuchs is melting down about nearby here in his tizzy of ad hominem, faux-sophisticate sneering and exasperated atheism. Jeez, Cornel West liked the book. Mr. Fuchs comes across like one of those people you see manning a Lyndon Larouche table.

How Convenient: Rousseau Ex Machina!

First things first. What this book is really a great example of is the very brilliant and deft use of wiggle words and easy escape clauses like "if only implicitly". Now no one writing about large themes can escape such conveniences, but when they are used to couch the basic theme of the book, there is trouble. The book uses Rousseau's thought and life as a metaphor for a lot else in politics. But even with the central theme, it is "only implicitly". This is the big tip-off. The author has a deeper agenda snuggled next to his heart, which he wants to bring forth. In this case it is likely a sort of reactionary Catholicism, or reactionary thought per se. No amount of quoting Rorty is going to ameliorate this guy's presence on wildly reactionary sites like the Front Porch Republic (which has advocated return to Monarch no less-- I'm not kidding!) . It gets worse though. For somehow he wishes with this book to leave the purposively vague impression that a lot of decent instincts in democratic republics are at bottom somehow related to acceptance rather unappealing sides of Rousseau......of course "if only implicitly". Well, real political freedom ain't very "implicit", as the Christians in the Middle East. He is so slippery on this, wielding his wiggle words and escape clauses like an craft show artiste, that it is often hard to find one sentence that is not answered by another that seems to couch it, designed for unclarity itself. In tragic irony, along the way he treats the Founders of real, decent democracies as utterly suspicious of the same, which is an irresponsible exaggeration for sure. (One good read of Walter Berns' Religion and the Founding Principle article will be like a good sherbert to cleanse the palate after a bad course.) But make no mistake he wants us to be suspicious of what most of us take for democracy, and are thankful for, because it is related somehow "if only implicitly" to Rousseau's ambitions.

Of course it is just propaganda of a sort ,and extremely tendentious, And once again shows the rather bought-and-paid for nature of University publishing anymore. Naturally it all completely predictably involves his proposing of his own view as some sort of "realism", against great "cynicism" and some sort of traditional view, which secretly means his own view without the grad school patina and rhetoric. You would scarcely know that a lot of the exquisite parsing between "perfectibility" and "men as they are" -- his extremely sound-bitey scattered polarities -- was admirably present in much more cogent ways in the very works of the Founders of democracies whom he wants to paint as suspicious of them! In the end, one can only guess that the whole thing is just a prolegomenon for the assumed need for some sort of Natural Law theory to undergird democracy. Just something Goldilocks- perfect like Thomism of some variety. Unsurprisingly, Robert George is even the editor here! How convenient.

The funny thing about this bad book is that the author seems at one point to diffusely criticize Rousseau's dislike of cities and cosmopolitanism. He want to sound with-it and trendy of course, and young people like cities of course. Again it is a little hard to tell, but that is the vibe. Now a few years later after living in DC and teaching kids at Georgetown, he announces on Front Porch Republic that he has had enough! He wants the small town, and the circle is closed; he is packin'up and moving to South Bend. He cannot buy a house in DC on a professor's salary, that's the unlikely excuse. Of course there are lots of fine people in the burbs. But as I have pointed out online, it is soooo strange that all these Catholic conservatives do not want to live right near "Little Rome" in the District. He could have afforded a house there probably. It all sounds like an excuse. There is an excess of democracy in the city, and too many men and women "as they are" and not as this self-indulgent and self-pitying fellow desires them to be.
