Great Cultural Insights

This is a really excellent window into Chinese culture. My wife (from China) read these famous poems in middle school, so they are real literature. The presentation here I find to be really superb, for all the right reasons: Pinyin above the characters, for example, is really good for words we don't already know, but this goes further by (often correctly) anticipating which words will be new to us, and putting those words into a preview-vocabulary box to read before studying the poem. Also, for better or for worse, it's in simplified characters, which is what you need to communicate with the majority of Chinese speakers in the world.

Best of all though, is that it has excellent cultural and historical notes about each poem.

Another reviewer pointed out that this Kindle book is just scans of the paper book, and therefore doesn't take advantage of the special features of Kindle. Although I don't fundamentally disagree with that comment, it is still nevertheless better than the printed book. Actually, in part because my wife wanted to re-read these too, we bought the printed book first. However, I find the print much easier to read on my iPad Pro Kindle app. Plus, of course, there is the advantage that, with the Kindle version, the book can be with me just about anytime I want to read it.

It's worth pointing out that this book is not intended for beginners just starting to learn Chinese.

Insightful book

This book covers the challenges and benefits of a type of relationship not often seen or understood - that of the older woman and the younger man. The authors interviewed numerous older woman/younger man couples for the book. Although some of the interviewees are women in their 30s, the book is geared more toward women in their 40s and 50s who are dating men more than 10 years younger than themselves. It covers everything from managing comments from strangers, dealing with disapproving friends and family, handling insecurity and fear, to more everyday issues such as who pays, what to do when you make more money than he does, how to avoid playing mommy, etc.

The most interesting part of this book is that it focuses on intimate relationships. It is NOT a "cougar" book that advises women to find young studs for hot sex. Instead, it encourages women to simply be open to younger men, and shows women that true intimacy and commitment can be found with younger men. And, as a 30-something who has dated several men in their 20s, I can personally say that the authors' points all ring true. If you are interested in a younger man, pick up this book, and give the relationship a chance.

As a mature woman who inadvertently keeps attracting younger men, I was curious about this phenomenon. These women shed an important and interesting light on it. It was a good read and offered a great perspective to an emerging trend. And it's about time!

Found this book interesting,easy to read and informative. Enjoyed the reports from others who have been involved in this type relationship. If you are looking for some positive feedbackfor the case of older women and younger men you will find it in this book. Also, points out some of the problems that can occur. I'm glad I read it.

Different then the rest....

I love this book! I love the recipes! I like how it is different from all the other "vegan" books out there; it is a step up. Instead of being called a vegan book it is a "whole-food plant-based" how to book. Vegan books usually contain lots of oil, sugar, salt and mock meats...Julieanna explains why all of these "anti-nutrients" are not good for you and how to get around using them in fun and delicious ways. I love the whole concept of the book. Great job Julieanna! She is an inspiration to me because I was a vegan for five years and fell off the wagon for cheese and now I am back on, thanks to her passion. This book reminded me all of the reasons I went plant-based five years ago and I will be giving this book to loved-ones as a reference because it explains everything you will ever need to know about being an herbivore!

Plant Based Nutrition

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant Based Nutrition, by Julieanna Hever is a beautifully written work which explains the importance of healthy eating. The book is designed for people who know little about plant based nutrition, and for those who are fully knowledgeable. The book may be read cover to cover or the reader can pick out items from the Table of Contents which may be of particular interest to them. I went directly to the Super Snacks (wouldn't you just know it?) chapter and really look forward to trying some of those treats. I then turned to the Super Seniors chapter because living a long and healthy life is right about where I am. Every reader will find much of interest in terms what makes us healthy and what drags us down.
Even though the title of this series of books (Idiot's Guide) would lead one to think this book is for the un or undereducated person, it is not. Mrs. Hever has done a wonderful job of presenting evidence to back up all of her positions on diet and health. In Appendix C, she provides nutrition charts which are a scholarly look at the facts regarding plant based nutrition. Anyone who has ever wondered how we really get our protein, or how many vitamins we really need, or what happens to us as we get older will find the answers clearly explained in this book. When you finish reading it you will be very well informed indeed on how to improve your total life style, and just feel better about yourself and how you provide for your family nutritionally speaking. Wonderful Book!!

I bought this book for my wife who is a vegetarian but I felt was not getting a good, broadbased diet with all the nutrients that she needed. This book will teach vegetarians how to eat a healthy diet which is not lacking in required nutrients. I am cutting back on animal products too and this book is so helpful. A must read for any new or existing vegetarians or vegans, or anyone else who would like to explore a plant based diet. Wonderfully written and easy to follow.

As a Feng Shui practitioner myself, I found this book a joy to read. Carol is a gifted writer and clearly connects very meaningfully with her clients. Some chapters had me laughing ... some had me crying ... and others had me getting up and moving things around or letting go of things that no longer served me! If you've heard of feng shui but don't understand how it can work or how it can help you ... this book will show you how gently and powerfully it can impact your circumstances. And even if you never plan to apply feng shui in your own life, you'll still be thrilled reading about the transformations her clients have undergone.

With the first chapter, I can see that these stories are going to touch my heart and simplify Feng Shui for me. Carol tells each one with a deep caring and reinforcement that the people and things we surround ourselves with have a large impact on us. Grice as father of a field of linguistic philosophy

Studies in the Way of Words, by Paul Grice, is a collection of papers by the late British philosopher of linguistics. His concepts such as the Maxims of Conversation and the basic ideas behind presupposition and implicature are vital to a robust understanding of communication through language.
As a philosophical text, Grice's work is a bit difficult to plow through. His prose is quite full of flourishes and there's enough amusing references in there to keep an interested reader going, however the reader must indeed be interested for this book to be of much use. Anyone expecting to fully digest any of the papers in this book would do well to plan on reading it 3 or 4 times. However, if done successfully, the concepts you'll take from it will indeed do much to expand your view of how linguistic communication works.
Rated 5 stars for its philosophical importance and 2 for readability, the 4-star rating given here is a sort of weighted average.

A Fundamental Work

This collection of papers have provided a spine for much work in pragmatics and the philosophy of language ever since they were published. Logic & Conversation, in particular, has helped to shape an entire field. Speaking against ordinary language philosophers such as Wittgenstein, Grice provided a wealth of vital distinctions, most of which have remained unshaken. In addition, and unlike many similar collocations of papers, there is a sense of cohesion to the volume, put in order as it was by Grice himself.

A classic, and requisite reading for anyone interested in the philosophy of language.

For any research about pragmatics and language use, you really need this one by Grice, as it is the standard in the field that everyone refers back to! Although not really recent, it is a good reference work and useful for studies.

The British Union of Feminists?

It is common received wisdom that Europe's fascist movements were reactionary in their views of women, and even misogynist in their ideologies and policies. If the street fighters and tough-guys hated women and wanted to stay in the kitchen, the eugenicists and scientists viewed them only as breeding stock. Few considered women human beings. So we are told.

Like much received wisdom, there is a grain of truth in such ideas. But by all appearances,it is a rather tiny one.

In this study, Martin Durham examines the ideas of various fascist movements relating to women. He aspires to a European perspective, but is by far the most thorough and successful in his treatment of the British Union of Fascists (or BUF, for short), Sir Oswald Mosley's British Nazi movement of the 1930s, where he makes extensive use of primary sources. As Durham shows, the BUF's views on women were the very antithesis of reactionary, and indeed several members of the old "Suffragette" movement were active in the BUF. Taking on one issue at a time, the author contrasts the well-worn clich�s with the actual policy statements of Mosley and his cronies, with remarkable revelations as the result.

Thus we learn, for example, that the BUF not only did not oppose female employment outside the home, but in fact favored equal pay for equal work, with no regard for sex (p36f). Nor did the BUF oppose birth control measures (p38f) -- And in considering this, we must remember that such were not nearly as commonplace and widely accepted in the 1930s as they are today. (In fact, this permissive position cost the BUF some of its support from Britain's right-wing Roman Catholics.) More familiarly conservative, but still anything but hostile to women, was the BUF's stance on pornography and other sexual immorality, which it vigorously opposed (p42f). As might also be expected, pornography, prostitution and the white slave trade were generally identified with the Jewish element in British society.

Further, the BUF mobilized women for its activities: as support staff, but also as speakers and even candidates for the party's tickets for parliament. Sir Oswald is on the record proudly noting that his (comparatively minuscule) movement fielded more female candidacies than did either of the big national parties. The elite corps of the BUF's female cadre was trained in first aid and jujitsu, so they could defend themselves against the violent attacks of the leftist opposition (p50f). If that is not "empowering" (as the current jargon goes), then what is?

Of course, none of this means that the BUF were "feminists" as that word is currently understood; the title of this review is largely humorous. But then, ideological "feminism" as of today is quite divorced from the ideas of the old "Women's Rights" movement. These, as we can see, the BUF largely supported (for example, equitable wages for women workers); while this is not what we will tend to expect from a self-styled group of Nazis, their position is nevertheless quite clear from the evidence that Durham adduces. In acknowledging as much, Durham surely has no intention of in any way "rehabilitating" or promoting the BUF; but he professes a need for understanding fascism better, looking to the facts rather than to stereotypes. Drawing a parallel with modern right-wing movements (on which he is apparently an academic expert), he sees a danger that these are increasingly successful in recruiting female supporters. Should society wish to counteract this trend, he argues, it is necessary to understand how and why women are drawn to these groups, and a caricatured view of them is not helpful in this regard. While this reviewer is quite unfamiliar with such matters, and thus unable to comment on these particular facts -- His primary interesting being history rather than contemporary political sociology -- the argument as such appears a sound one.

In any case, Martin Durham's reappraisal of the (by the standards of its day) quite extraordinarily woman-friendly BUF is a welcome addition to our knowledge of historical Nazism. By and large, the only relevant complaint would be that the book's present title is somewhat misleading; the book focuses overwhelmingly on British matters, rather than women and "fascism" as an international phenomenon. This could have been made clearer. Still, this is quite a minor flaw to a highly original and useful work of historical scholarship.

About the Author

Edward S. Greenberg is a Professor of Political Science and a Research Professor of Behavioral Science at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Ed’s research and teaching interests include American government and politics, domestic and global political economy, and democratic theory and practice, with a special emphasis on workplace issues. He has just completed a multi-year, longitudinal panel study, funded by the NIH, that examines the impact of corporate restructuring on employees.

Benjamin I. Page is the Gordon S. Fulcher Professor of Decision Making at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Ben’s interests include public opinion and policy making, the mass media, empirical democratic theory, political economy, policy formation, the presidency, and American foreign policy. He is currently engaged in a large collaborative project to study Economically Successful Americans and the Common Good.

It is ok

Well, this was requested by the professor, so I bought it. Would I use any other products besides Pearson if there were more available, and better, yes. I do not really think the book is exceptional, neither is the online practice. Lots of little errors and somethings are not very clear. Questions of quizzes are not well formulated either. I think college professors end up choosing Pearson products because there are not many other options that meet price (reasonable enough for undergrads) and content. So, it is just okay.

I enjoyed this textbook.

It didn't feel overly dense and unapproachable the way some textbooks do.

But it also didn't feel overly light and fluffy like some, if that makes sense.

It struck a decent balance.
