This book has some interesting opinions on how the Native people of the Americas lived, the design of their dwellings and what their buildings inferred about how they interacted.There are many references to illustrations which are unfortunately not in the kindle version. It Often refers to their state of civilization as a stage of barbarism but statements like this one " The law of hospitality as administered by the American aborigines tended to the final equalization of subsistence. Hunger and destitution could not exist at one end of the indian village or in one section of an encampment while plenty prevailed else where in the same village or encampment" makes me wonder who the savages truly were or are. There are many observations like this one in the book and make it of interest to read IMO.

Morimoto in his own words...without that goofy tv translator!

[[VIDEOID:mo1DLW7OU9RBDJ5]]Masaharu Morimoto is one of the few chefs I've seen on tv that I've been really impressed with. His execution is flawless, everything he makes looks delicious even if it involves a food I don't like, and he just plain seems like a cool guy. His book, Morimoto: The New Art of Japanese Cooking offers a ton of great recipes as well as some background information on Morimoto, and his insights on certain aspects of Japanese cuisine and presentation. There have been some minor criticisms that this book isn't exactly traditional Japanese cuisine, and the title of the book should make it clear that he wasn't going for that, but reading the introduction, you'll understand why Morimoto doesn't want to be held back by tradition. He wants to make new things, try new takes on old dishes, and enjoys combining one style with another. Take one look at his tuna pizza, found in the Sashimi and Sushi section, and you'll see how seemingly crazy ideas work.

The book is divided into the following main chapters:

Rice, Noodles, Breads, and Soups
Fish and Shellfish
Duck, Chicken, Pork, Beef, and Lamb
Vegetables, Tofu, and Eggs
Recipes to Contemplate
Desserts

I'm no chef, but recipes are written so simply that it's hard to mess up anything in here. Ingredients that might not be found at your local store can be found at the specialty markets in the back of the book (though there is a typo saying that one Uwajimaya shop is in Beaverton, Washington...when in fact Beaverton is in Oregon). The majority of the recipes have short introductions by Morimoto where he describes the dish or talks about how he came up with it, and the presentation of the book is beautiful. If anything, my only complaint is that there could be a few more pictures for some dishes, but 90% of them are covered perfectly. I especially liked the chapter breaks where Morimoto talks about Japanese knives, seaweed, plating and more. He comes off as a teacher giving history lessons on the subjects, and genuinely wanting to help out those who read the book, and never sounds full of himself. The introduction alone is worth checking out this book. Morimoto really did work his way to the top, and I have full respect for the guy.

If you haven't picked up a copy yet, do so before it goes out of print again. I'm a picky eater but this book has encouraged me to try new things. Here's hoping for a second book that's just as good or even better, if possible, than this one.

Chef Morimoto shows of his artistic and culinary skills and is a good teacher.

I've had the pleasure of dining in some of Chef Morimoto's restaurants and always had great meals so I wanted to add this book on his perspective on Japanease/Asian cooking. Overall I found the book very well written with interesting recipes and good photography. At times I felt like he was in my kitchen teaching me as I read. He was always fun to watch on the original Iron Chef shows and his master style of cooking and pulling in different elements of Asian cuisine .

About my only complaint is that whoever designed the book used a background image behind some of the pages of words that makes it very hard to read what is printed. I found I had to read those pages in a brighter lit room and really focus on what was written and not the background image.

Excellent book, Not for the faint of heart.

Purchased this book for two reasons: 1. I am a big admirer of the artistry that Chef Morimoto brings to his food. 2. I wanted a few choice recipes to add to a dinner party I had planned. There is little room for home cooks that are not advanced in this book. The ingredient lists can be difficult to fulfill unless you are privileged enough to reside near various gourmet and asian markets, so creativity and skill come in handy to replace things or make adjustments when exotic ingredients are not available. The recipes for the most part are very accurate and don't produce the typical "no one will ever attempt this" results that some high end cook books give. The photography is superb and congruent with the art of the cuisine. I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone who has a heart for adventure in the kitchen and a hefty budget for the more exotic offerings listed. Chef Morimoto is as unique a talent as can be had in the typically traditional world of Japanese cuisine. Excellent book.

Maya Angelou was an American poet, a great memoirist, and civil rights activist that helped influence the world. She was a powerful, yet beautiful voice to the voiceless. Her works have been deemed some of the most beautiful works of art, providing the wisdom and hope all people look for. The four poems within the collection, “Phenomenal Woman: Four Poems Celebrating Women” is definitely a keeper because she gives you all walks of life as a woman in which she actually experienced firsthand in one single book. Maya Angelou’s book, “Phenomenal Woman” is one of her best works that I think every girl, no matter the color of her skin, should have in their collection because it helps young women to face adversities, build an identity, and appreciate why we are all unique and special.
Although the book goes in a different order when reading, I would like to begin with “Our Grandmothers” to set the foundation connecting history to the present. This poem told the story of generations of women that faced adversities in order to save and support their children. I believe this poem demonstrates how grandmothers and mothers are a critical asset to the family. It briefly begins with the scene of a mother enslaved en route to save her children knowing that she would be the sacrifice for their freedom. It further names great African-American women who came before us, who sacrificed and laid down a foundation of strength, which allowed many of us to be here today. It finally connects the dots to the “grandmothers” and adversities we see in today’s generation; still yet these women are being an angel to their families, even though they struggle to provide in a time and age where the “system” is still against them.
The poem “Weekend Glory” is definitely a must read because in today’s society, we see young women with a lack of priorities. These young ladies would rather flaunt and impress people while living above their means than conduct themselves as ladies. They struggle with low self-esteem and insecurities that they “bandage” with fancy cars, clothing, and glamour while still being unhappy. This poem can definitely teach young women how to strive for more, have priorities, and still have fun.
This collection of poems should also be purchase because it helps young women to build a strong identity no matter what society says or try to do to break them down. In the poem “Still I Rise”, Maya demonstrates with her powerful voice no matter what is thrown your way, said, or physically/mentally breaks you down, you will still rise and overcome. I believe this poem is also very important due to what is going on in current society with the killing of innocent black men, women, boys and girls. This poem was referred to as the “Black Anthem” by writer Hermene Hartman in 2014. This poem still applies to today’s complications in which Maya fought so hard to resolve before her death. This poem teaches us to persevere, be patient, strong, and continue to be the hopes and dreams of our ancestors.
In closing, the final poem, “Phenomenal Woman” is my favorite because it taught me no matter how different I am, to appreciate and embrace my differences because it makes me unique. This poem is what allowed me to be open with myself and build my own foundation. I love myself for the country, tall, skinny, kinky hair QUEEN that I am.
This is a book for all women to pass down from generation to generation, and yet the words of this book remains as powerful and meaningful as when they were first written by our dear beloved Maya Angelou. So of course, I recommend the purchasing of this collection.

Inspiring! An essential treasure for all women to have.

Wonderful! Such a powerful 'little' book that I believe every woman should have. This was a gift to my mum. I would definitely recommend it as a gift to women of all ages. If so, make sure you have one for yourself or read it before you give it. The words are beautifully preached from the amazing soul that is Maya Angelou. Give her a place in your heart and you will be richly rewarded for the remainder of your lifetime.

About the Author

CARL SANDBURG (1878–1967) was twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize, first in 1940 for his biography of Abraham Lincoln and again in 1951 for Complete Poems. Before becoming known as a poet, he worked as a milkman, an ice harvester, a dishwasher, a salesman, a fireman, and a journalist. Among his classics are the Rootabaga Stories, which he wrote for his young daughters at the beginning of his long and distinguished literary career.

definitive Lincoln by one of America's best

Thousands upon thousands of Civil War books are available, as American readers seem to have a limitless appetite for that era. If you are looking for the best, read Sandburg on Lincoln. A major American poet takes on one of the best-known, best-loved, most tragic of American historical figures.
When I was a freshman in high school, our English teacher offered us a deal: Anyone who read Sandburg's biography (then in six rather daunting volumes) would not have to attend class for a semester. I took him up on that offer, and was blessed to find my way through Sandburg's gift to the American people. Here is the highly detailed, thoroughly researched, and articulately written story of Abe Lincoln's years among us.
If you have time to read only one of the Civil War books from that burgeoning genre, read this one. You will come to know, from the inside out, this prairie boy who became a towering figure in American history.

A Pulitzer Prize winner's master work.

I believe Sandburg is the only author to win the Pulitzer for both poetry and history. Originally a multi volume history taking decades to complete, this single volume work is an appetizer. I read it in the 1960's and went on with relish to the full multi volume work.
This single volume is insightful, laser like in it's detail yet painting the times of Lincoln in a broad and beautiful brush. Did you know that in 1860 tools could be honed to within one ten thousandth of an inch of accuracy? That magazines and newspapers said the world would change for-ever because of the new "instant" communication nation wide?
This is more than biography. It is a woven fabric depicting the times and life of Abraham Lincoln.

An American Classic on a Classic American

I collect old and rare books. My mother bought me a copy of Sandburg's one-volume edition published in 1954. Honestly, it was slow to start, but once it got to the 1850's, I couldn't put it down. Lincoln's deeds are so often trivialized in our history books. But Sandburg meticulously builds up the background in a way that forces his reader to appreciate the magnitude of the moment, and the importance of each decision--whether right or wrong--that President Lincoln made. It easily took three full weeks to read, but it was more than worth it. I closed the book thinking, "I can't believe it's over!" My advice: Read this book right away, and make someone else read it too. You'll need someone to talk to when you're through!

Good, but far from I'm the best of the Once Upon a Time Travel books

This story is a cute and quick spin on the Nutcracker. I did enjoy it, but I would be lying if I said that it wasn't a tiny bit disappointing. I get that it's a short story, but it was just a bit too short for my liking. Everything about this story had me wanting more; more character development of Max, more details of his home, more of he and Clara's blooming romance...more everything! Yet sadly, it came up a bit lacking. I really don't think it should have been done as a short story, but rather a full length installment of the Once Upon a Time Travel series. Also, the fact that the romance in this story is basically rated PG, was both surprising and a bit disappointing. One of the things I've always adored about this series, was the odd (but awesome) coupling of graphic sex scenes mixed in with the cute whimsy of the fairytale settings. Jill Miles always made it work and work well at that. This story however, kind of felt like going out to Chinese dinner, but not getting your fortune cookie at the end. All in all though, it was cute and entertaining...it was just missing that extra bit of depth and detail that made the other books so great.

Sugar and spice!

After watching the Nutcracker ballet with my sister and her daugther and then seeing this at Amazon.de I simply had to have this book and it transported me right back into the wonderful story. I adore Muffin, she is one of my favorite fairy godmothers of all time and she is at her witty punny bright and merry best in this novella. The heroine is quite bewildered to find herself in a story she doesn't know anything about but her nutcracker helps her through and I totally fell for him doing that. It is a sugary sweet, christmassy nice story full of laughter and romantic but suspense and thrill too and it transfers the ballet story perfectly in a fantasy novella that keeps you reading right up to the grande finale. Thanks, Jill Myles, for this perfect read for the season (but I am sure it can be enjoyed throughout the year!).
