Wonderful resource

I am a great fan of the "Approaches to Teaching" series. As a teacher of honors and advanced placement literature courses, I am always looking for ways to challenge my students and broaden their appreciation and understanding of literature. These books, especially the text on Jane Eyre, allow us to look at the book from various perspectives. My class particularly enjoyed the discussion of the narrative voice in Jane Eyre. If you are looking for a way to add depth to class discussions, you can't go wrong with this series - they are the staple of my personal reference section and I refer to them throughout the semester!

I thought the book could have been reduced to half the size. If I had the choice to read this book, I wouldn't take the opportunity. It was good, but too detailed. I liked the story, but it was predictable at times.

Fabulous book!

Great practical advice for any clinician, lay person, or pastor. If you are human you will eventually have contact with someone in crisis. This is a great guide for anyone who simply wants to better care for someone going through a major event in their life. It will certainly enhance your practice - whether you are a novice or expert. Clear, concise, and practical (I know, I have already said practical, but really - it is!).

Crisis Counseling

In a well known passage of the New Testament Jesus declares "In this world you will have trouble" (John 16.33). For most this is an obvious statement as they have endured abuse, assault, miscarriage or death. What comfort can there be when the bottom falls out? There's more to John 16.33 than the sentence quoted above. Jesus continues and says "But take heart! I have overcome the world." Jesus has conquered that very system which opposes God and brings trouble on man. Yet, as Jesus modeled for us, there is more to comforting those that hurt than spiritual platitudes. So, how do we minister with compassion in the knowledge of Jesus' overcoming of the world?

Scott Floyd has provided counselors and ministers with a valuable resource for their ministry. Floyd is currently a teaching fellow at the B.H. Carroll Theological Institute in Arlington, TX. He was involved in counseling the survivors of the shootings at Wedgewood Baptist Church in Fort Worth, TX. He has written Crisis Counseling to serve as a manual for counselors and pastors to care for their people.

He begins by providing four separate chapters defining Crisis, Trauma, Loss, and Grief. It's important for us to have a clear understanding of these terms and experiences in order to help those experiencing them. From here he provides a model for helping and strategies to intevene in the midst of particular crises. The book also gives additional resources for identifying symptoms of particular problems faced by those who have gone through trauma. He also gives a listing of denominational crisis resources.

Floyd has given ministers an important resource for tending the flock which God has entrusted to them. We all experience trouble. But, it's necessary that pastors and counselors have the skills and insight necessary to deal with difficult and troubling circumstances. This will prove to be a go-to manual for crisis situations for me and I would recommend it to anyone involve in Christian leadership!

Fascinating - but poorly executed

I'm writing to the first book "Shadow" in the series; but my comments apply to all three books - all of which I've read. The fact that I bought and read the three books in order is testament to the "Fascinating" aspect of my title.

The "good news" is that Michael Booker is writing about a subject, the Paranormal World from a gay perspective, which, to my knowledge, is not treated that often by other writers. It's a subject that interests me greatly. His storey line is fascinating, character development is carried out with thoughtfulness and depth, and the rhythm of the unfolding stories is well paced. Yes, this is generally a "page-turner" series.

Having said that, I can't agree more with "Chris (Norman, OK)" in his comments about "the desperate need for an editor/proof-reader"; and I would add to that, some serious course work for the author in English grammar. The errors in grammatical construction, the glut of poorly used (and over used) words and expressions like "hella", and the simple editorial carelessness, totally distract from the depth of one's interest in the storey. After a while, especially in the third (and most interesting) book, all one could see was the errors.

There's a lot to be said positively for the career that is starting here; but there's a LOT of work to be done if this author is to assure his success as a writer.

Enjoyable

Shadow was an interesting, unexpected, and unique read. The reason for the four stars instead of five is the desperate need for a editor/proofreader. The many typos kept taking me out of the story, as well as the overuse of the word "hella." It seemed that every character used this word every few pages, and I constantly flash-backed to that South Park episode...again, taking me out the well-crafted world of the novel.

What a terrific book from first time author, Michael S. Booker. The characters were very well developed and I fell in love with each of them immediately. In fact the story had me so absorbed that I found it almost impossible to put the book down. I'm looking forward to more, maybe a series?

What interested me in this book was seeing my students using it in my class for quick reference when evaluating the arguments of both their peers and of "professional philosophers." Having read it, I find it to be an invaluable reference for just such occasions: when the name or explanation of a fallacy in reasoning is detected, but one cannot recall exactly what they are looking for, a look through this handbook will bring directly to mind what the appropriate critique of an argument is, for which one was searching. For this reason alone, it is worth the price. About the Author
Peter W. Airasian is Professor of Education at Boston College, where he is Chair of the Educational Research, Measurement, and Evaluation Program. His main teaching responsibilities are instructing pre- and in-service teachers in classroom assessment strategies. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, with a concentration in testing, evaluation, and assessment. He is a former high school chemistry and biology teacher. He has authored numerous books on assessment, including of Minimal Competency Testing (1979), School Effectiveness: A Reassessment of the Evidence (1980), The Effects of Standardized Testing (1982), Teacher Evaluation Toolkit (1997), Assessment in the Classroom (1997 and 2000), and Classroom Assessment (1991, 1994, 1997, and 2001)). He is a past Chair of the American Educational Research Association’s Special Interest Group on Classroom Assessment. Currently, he is continuing his study of the role of assessments in classrooms and examining issues related to the evaluation of teachers.

Michael Russell is Associate Professor of Education at Boston College’s Lynch School of Education where he directs the Technology and Assessment Study Collaborative. His research and teaching interests lay at the intersection of assessment and technology. He teaches classroom assessment for pre-service students and courses that focus on issues in testing, assessment, and evaluation to graduate students. He has conducted several studies that focus on the use of computer-based technologies to increase test validity. These research issues include computers and writing, computer-based test accommodations for students with special needs, developing diagnostic tests for teachers to use in the classroom, and improving the instructional utility of large-scale tests. He is author of Technology and Assessment: the Tale of Two Interpretations.

Its an amazing text with clear concepts and a wide review over the theme of assessment kids. It contains a lot of tips and clear techniques to follow in assessment in the classroom for any levelof teaching, so its a very good tool as a manual to study and adquire professional development for any serious individual advocated to teaching profession.
