`In sum we have a curious book. The intelligence and clarity of the author can never be faulted. Ideas are at the forefront, not technique. The book is often highly original, but the first half is strictly derivative. Nonetheless there are nw ideas of value, most of all about the state. I would have been happier had the author started at the truly new, focused on that, developed it, and thrown out the rest. About the Author

Professor of Economics and holds the C. Marks Chair at the Department of Economics, Cornell University. He has previously been Distinguished Visitor, London School of Economics (1993), Visiting Professor at the Department of Economics, Princeton University (1989-91), Member, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1985-86) and Professor, Delhi School of Economics (1985-94). He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and a recipient of the Mahalanobis Memorial Award for contributions to economics. In 1981-2 he was CORE fellow at CORE, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. He has published extensively in the areas of development economics, game theory, social choice and welfare and industrial organization theory.

Remodelling government into game-theoretic reasoning

This is a delightful and well-argued account of how government may be endogenised in economic analysis. The author would have us believe that government as an actor is in the same category as a consumer or an entrepreneur. Basu bravely questions conventional wisdom about assumptions held regarding institutions in economic analysis. Ambitiously titled "A Study of the Social and Political Foundations of Economics", the best part of this book are the author's numerous examples to show how economists have a poor understanding of motives, powerbases and collective action. There are just a few typographical errors (for instance the missing curve I in Figure 9.2 on page 207). However, what stops me from giving it five-star rating is that the book does have some conceptual infirmities (for instance, the author confuses the notion of government with the concept of nation-state, collective action is insufficiently explored, unconscious group processes not hypothesised at all, the terms lawful and legal are occasionally used interchangeably etc.). The most intellectually stimulating part of the book is the appendix that takes us through a hilarious account of the Fallacy of the Ignored Bridging Function. This was not an easy book to walk off from and I am glad to have finished it at one sitting. The author's clarity of expression and his sense of humour make this a book to remember and to recommend to others.

Wonderful and easy to read book

I may be a little biased since I took a class with Prof. Basu and this is one of the texts we used.

For those interested in game theory, this book is a great and simple introduction. The material is presented in a very clear and elegant manner and Basu is able to engage the reader with a lot of humor and anecdotal information. He uses personal experiences to illustrate his points that I feel many people would be able to relate to.

Also, it's a pretty short book and can be read in a few sittings and although there is some math in this book, it is not too overwhelming.

Excellent integration of patient centered practice and clinician expertise.

If there's any single text out there that does a better job of incorporating current science, clinic reasoning, and a biopsychosocial approach to therapy I haven't found it. Any physio would do well to read through this book even if manual therapy isn't a large part of your practice.

Too much primal behavior, not enough human elements

I was so excited when I read the sample, it seemed interesting and pulled me in. I was expecting so much more to this, a little romance some chase before the two main characters got together, but no. Everything about this was all about the raw base nature of the Were's and hardly no human element at all. Too much sex, way too much sex. Not enough emotion, I could not relate to one character and all the nudity and dominance showing licking and biting was weird and overdone. It was like reading about animals that moonlighted as humans occasionally. I was disappointed to say the least. I just discovered Radclyffe and I like a few of her romances and I guess I thought she would bring some of that romance element here to this series, but I was mistaken. If your looking for a cold, sex driven story with not enough interesting plot to not care about all the raw sex, then this is for you. I gave it two stars because the writing was not bad, but that's all that WASN'T that bad.

This is one book that I truly had trouble finishing. I wouldn't classify it as romance so much as bestial sex on steroids. Don't get me wrong, I'll enjoy a good romance book as much as the next person, as long as there's actual *romance* involved. But this was just sex, sex, and more sex (at one point, I actually said "Not again.") and there was little emotion in it. I never felt the love between the main characters, and certainly never saw any character development. It felt like Raand was going too far into the primal, bestial mind of animals, and it reflected in the prevalent, (often violent) sex scenes. There wasn't much of a plot, either, and at the same time, I never felt I got to know any of the characters. There was no depth. Too many scenes of characters going into extremes of rage or arousal, with little in between. Honestly, this book fell far short of my expectations. I certainly won't be reading the others in the series. A big disappointment.

This is prob with a cheesy supernatural blanket over it. I'm being serious. The plot is weak the.characters may at some point have gotten interesting if 95% of them weren't always thinking about or having sex. The sex wasn't interesting but it was abundant. The characters incited in me more irritation than intrigue. The multiple species had a somewhat unique interpretation it just wasn't an interesting one and again revolved mainly around sex in their mind and their sexual interactions with each other. The relationships seemed almost solely based on sex. The bit of politics thrown in was pretty predictable and of course you can't trust vampires but the story itself was weak. People really seem to enjoy this but book and this series I bought this one to give it a shot before venturing on to the others but after reading this I can say with confidence and no disappointment whatsoever that I will NOT be reading anymore of this series. And this is perhaps the fifth book by this author(under this name or otherwise) that I've read and I've realized her style just doesn't seem for me this book was the nail in the coffin. However even with that being said I don't think my personal preference in authors or writing style are what turns me away from this book I really just don't like it. I suggest you borrow it if you can to see if it's your taste but I really don't think it's worth a buy I'm sorry.

About the Author
Larry Collins has been a captain of the Los Angeles County Fire Department's central USAR Company since 1990. He has been involved in rescue operations worldwide, including the Pentagon collapse during the September 11, 2001 attacks, and the Alfred P. Murrah Building bombing in Oklahoma City, as well as numerous natural disasters such as the Northridge (CA) earthquake. Collins has been awarded multiple medals of valor for distinguished service.

Every year fire fighters and other rescuers are killed attempting to pull victims from rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, flood channels, rock quarries, tunnels, the ocean, and other bodies of water. The majority of water rescue operations are successful, but there are significant numbers of close calls. The inherent dangers associated with water rescue demand attention to strategy, tactics, training, standard operating guidelines, and other factors related to operational safety. Rescuer safety must be of paramount concern in all cases, because injured, lost, or dead rescuers can help no one.

The history of the fire service is replete with stories of ill-prepared, improperly equipped would be rescuers killed trying to help. Many of these cases have involved fast-moving water or large ocean waves and first responders who entered the water without the appropriate equipment, who weren't trained for the conditions they faced, or who were simply overwhelmed by the moving water and ended up in the same predicament as the original victim(s).

We've all heard that the force of moving water is deceiving; that it can overwhelm even the strongest swimmers and rescuer under the right (or wrong) conditions. This author, a lifelong swimmer assigned to an engine company, once found himself fighting for his own life after jumping into the raging sea during an on-duty rescue in a 1982 storm to rescue a fisherman who was washed off a rocky reef at the base of a 250 foot cliff in 12 to 15 foot waves with nothing but rock and reef along the coast.

The author, who like most firefighters at the time, had no formal training in surf and ocean rescue, was able to make his way to the victim and begin swimming the man back into the surf line. But the situation quickly turned into a life and death struggle to keep the victim and rescuer afloat as they began to be dashed against the rocks, pulled beneath the surface in the venture created by a canyon of submerged rocks, and washed back and forth 25 yards at a time by the storm swells.

After several minutes of struggle, the rescue was ultimately successful. However, more than twenty years later, this author is still left with these strong impressions from the experience: One understands the true worth of air when he is repeatedly forced beneath the surface to the point where "Just one more breath of air" becomes the most important thing in the world, and where he is forced to make a decision whether to hang on to the victim or abandon him to get a breath of air before blacking out. One also understands the true value of a rapid intervention system to provide emergency assistance when things start to go wrong and the rescuer gets into trouble. Fortunately, through youthful determination and luck, this author was able to hang onto the man, and everyone escaped alive, albeit with various levels of hypothermia, cuts and scrapes, and a renewed respect for the power of water.

Instead, you get newspaper clippings about Southern California disasters that you could get free over the Internet, some murky photographs that look like like rejects from an amateur's scrapbook, and WAY too many of the author's own "war stories". Here's what you DON'T get: a single detailed procedure, a single technical diagram, or anything that even remotely resembles a standard authoritative strategy for handling ANY type of disaster. I don't believe that the author wrote the book with any intent to defraud, but this volume has got to be the most audacious rip-off in the history of Search-and-Rescue education. Save your money, and do your staff a favor: buy ANYTHING besides this book.
