Practical Book, Got Me Started on Prosecution

This is a very practical and easy-to-read book, and has helped me in my first steps of prosecution. It provides a good conceptual framework as well as concrete legal guidance. I also found the new section to the 2nd edition on functional language very useful, as this language is becoming increasingly used and debated. If you need just one book on patent prosecution, this is the one.

Good read for an Inventor

This book is written for a wide audience. The writing is clear and the subject matter is well thought out and easy to understand. I learned many new things about how a patent should be structured and written so that its value can be maximized. For example, a patent is not a thing it is a concept that is most clearly defined by a problem solution statement. These are big ideas. The patent I am working on now is many times better because of the information I have learned in this book. Lots of good information in this book. This book has helped me greatly.

I have read almost every IP Drafting / Analysis books printed in the past 7 years and Ron Slusky's: Invention Analysis and Claim Drafting, 2nd edition is a must have for practitioners and inventors alike. It's by far one of the best written and structured books in the subject area.

His book provides clear and valuable insights in analyzing new inventions and how to drill down and flesh out core inventive concepts. He combines best practices and a seasoned perspective in describing how to structure broad and highly diverse claims that captures core inventive concepts from a variety of defensible positions.

About the Author

Richard S. Cohen is Associate Professor of South Asian Religious Literatures at the University of California, San Diego. This is his first book, though he has published numerous articles in such venues as the Journal of the American Academy of Religion and History of Religions. He is now working on a study of Buddhism and counterculture.

Not worth the time

This book has some interesting dimensions but seems to get a little lost in a tangle of overextended academic theories and a tendency to grossly overstate points.

The author makes the valid point that we must be careful about applying our concepts of what is "Buddhist" retroactively onto far removed times, places and people. But for all of his sensitivities to such things, he is strangely overdeterministic at times. For instance, he hypostatizes that because the Zen "rhetoric of immediacy" has been "enlisted in nativist, nationalist, militarist and sectarian purposes," anyone whose value system has been "informed" by Zen Buddhism is "an unwitting tool of medieval Japanese media-moguls just as certainly as the kid who thinks that he is merely obeying his thirst when he buys a Sprite." Uh, really? Does he not consider that some people simply happen to find a rhetoric of immediacy useful in their lives (and others happen to genuinely enjoy Sprite)?

This tendency to overstate points riddles the whole book. To give another example, he quarrels with the idea that the Ajanta caves should be construed as primarily Buddhist (or Bauddha, as he prefers) because Hindus utilized them for other purposed in the 19th century. Taking it a bit far, I would say.

Cohen says that he finds the Dalai Lama's assertion "there is every reason to appreciate and respect all forms of spiritual practice" to be "no less disturbing" than Tom Delay's statement to a group of Christian supremacists that "only Christianity offers a comprehensive worldview that covers all areas of life and though, every aspect of creation. Only Christianity offers a way to live in response to the realities that we find in this world--only Christianity." Really, he finds equivalence there? I understand his underlying point, but once again he way overstates it.

Cohen does do a good job comparing the claims of both Goenka and Richard Hayes to have distilled "what the Buddha really" taught, skewering their presumptions rather delightfully. But no sooner has Cohen finished this chapter than he obnoxiously proposes his own (rather incoherent) new and improved moral philosophy in the last chapter of the book. Thanks, but no thanks.

Great for learning basic ochem

I would recommend Organic Chemistry: A Short Course to anyone learning basic ochem. This book is meant to be an introduction to organic chemistry, but it is very information-dense and informative, and introduces all the basics. (Synthesis and reactions of twelve of the major classes of organic molecules.) The chapters are concise, organized, and very clearly written. The questions at the end of each chapter were helpful for me and usually align well with the solutions manual. (If you've used many textbooks you know that often solutions don't align with text problems.) I didn't find any glaring errors in the text.

This past spring I took an extension course through UC Berkeley that was *very* short on instruction. Each lesson had an assigned chapter from this book, as well as assigned questions from the end of the chapter. There were no video lectures, no modules with supplementary instruction or anything. (I don't really recommend UC Berkeley Extension.) The homework assignments and midterm were graded on accuracy and accounted for a combined 50% of the grade, and the final exam was closed-book and proctored, and comprised 40% of the grade. (10% was based on discussion questions.) I relay this to say that grading for the course, though there was hardly any instruction, was taken seriously. I used this book and the accompanying solutions manual as my only resource and made an A in the course. (Granted, I did put in a lot of effort.) I do highly recommend it.

Super support for this book/set

The textbook and answer/study guide are a really good quick lightning tour through a lot of the foundation material involved in a high school or undergraduate organic chemistry course. It's written in very accessible laymen's 'everyday' English that is understandable for a keen amateur.

At the same time, it's thorough enough for a good introduction with the intention for further study.

This book and study book are now in the 13th edition, and honestly with the difference in price it's WELL worth buying an earlier edition like this one and saving yourself a couple hundred $$ since there's very little difference

Incidentally, I personally would look at the study guide as an almost -necessary- support for the book. As a stand-alone, the textbook is very sketchy on a fair number of points, but the study guide manages to fill them in.

for a chemistry book, it's pretty decent

I'm not a big fan of chemistry or anything, but this was actually a pretty useful book. It is easy to read, has lots of examples, and systematically goes through each type of organic molecule you might encounter and tells you how to recognize one, name it, what it's chemical properties are, some info about where they are found and how they're used, and how they are made, broken down, and how they react with other compounds.

One thing that is lacking is how a lot of the chemistry actually works sometimes. They might just show the reactants and the products and expect you to memorize it, rather than learning the process behind it. But, I guess that's part of the limitations of it being a 'short course'.....

About the Author
Adam Smith was born in a small village in Kirkcaldy, Scotland in 1723. He entered the University of Glasgow at age fourteen, and later attended Balliol College at Oxford. After lecturing for a period, he held several teaching positions at Glasgow University. His greatest achievement was writing The Wealth of Nations (1776), a five-book series that sought to expose the true causes of prosperity, and installed him as the father of contemporary economic thought. He died in Edinburgh on July 19, 1790.
