Through these achievements, and by his reimagining of the concept of the base - which he generally poised in a dialogic and shifting relation to his sculpture - Brancusi would shift the foundations of art.

This scholarly study of the radically inventive Romanian abstract sculptor looks at his life and work from a poststructuralist point of view. As she draws upon Lacanian psychoanalytic theory, among other things, Chave's obvious love for the outwardly simplistic beauty in Brancusi's oeuvre becomes quickly mired in the impenetrably abstruse prose of the academy. Chave states that she employs "a hermeneutic model of psychopoetics," fashioning a "counterorthodox or reinventive approach" to his sculpture. For all but those in academe to whom poststructuralism remains a viable paradigm, such language is excessive. Brancusi himself once cautioned his critics, "Don't look for obscure formulas or mystery. I offer you pure joy." Only those academic libraries seeking comprehensive coverage of 20th-century art need consider buying this. A far better purchase for most collections would be Radu Varia's handsome Brancusi (LJ 3/1/87), which remains in print.

Sylvia Chant is professor of geography at the London School of Economics. She has written many books, including Women-headed Households: Diversity and Dynamics in the Developing World and Mainstreaming Men in Gender and Development (with Matthew Gutmann).

Nikki Craske is director of the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of Liverpool and senior lecturer in Latin American Politics. When the protagonist is a ruthless murderer

This crime thriller has a certain offbeat brilliance to it once the reader gets used to the idea that the protagonist is a despicable human being with very few redeeming human qualities. Set in politically corrupt modern Italy, "At the End of a Dull Day" is the story of Giorgio Pellegrini, an ex-terrorist/gangster who has carved out a very comfortable life as a respectable and prosperous night club owner in a town in the Veneto region of Italy. He is in full control of his life, including the minute-to-minute manipulation of his beautiful wife's daily routine and total subservience to his personal whims and physical needs. When his carefully built golden life starts to come apart after a major betrayal by his lawyer and political sponsor which involves the embezzlement of most of Pellegrino's savings (actually investments in some shady projects), he reverts to old and very violent habits to salvage his garden of eden. Things spiral downward when the Calabrian mafia arrive on his doorstep.

While often a depressing commentary on the bottomless political and social hell that author Massimo Carlotto ascribes to contemporary Italy, the plot of this novel is unusually clever and frequently witty enough to keep the reader from total disgust. By book's end, it's difficult not to develop some level of admiration for Pellegrino and his determination to survive and prosper in what is very much a savage and violent political jungle.

A Quick and Enjoyable, Yet Underdeveloped Read

"At the End of a Dull Day" is a noir novel about a restaurant owner who is a former hit man, who runs into trouble when he is double-crossed by a former benefactor. The tension increases as the novel progresses, and soon our protagonist Giorgio clashes with some local Mafia who are trying to take over his business. At the same time, he is involved in a love triangle with his wife and another woman, and his prostitution ring is in danger of being foiled.

While the pace of the book keeps a steady beat, I find that many of the characters are one-dimensional. Also, I find the plot is unoriginal and some of the plot developments didn't make any sense. I couldn't understand how this character would be so callous about random murder, and his relationships with the women in the book are very poorly developed. The women are portrayed as sniveling, wimpy weaklings and I thought it negatively impacted the book.

A treat for lovers of noir. Makes you want to read Carlotto's early work. I don't know if it's indicative of Italian noir but unlike even some of the American classics, the plot is straightforward. A good, cold-blooded read … with a sense of humor.

Absolute satisfaction!

As soon as I finished "Over You" I went in search of this sequel "Second Chances". This book has it all...mystery, drama, conflict, love, family...characters to root for and characters you'd like to slap (did I say that?)...and the ending leaves you happy. I so appreciate an author who can write a good story without stooping to gratuitous sex for titillation...and whose characters can talk to each other without throwing in foul language. I wish more writers would take a lesson from Christine's dedication to clean writing, BRAVO!

I honestly loved this book! Definitely a 5 star for me. I first read "Over You" and couldn't wait for this one to come out. I found this book suspenseful at times, and romantic at other times. Loved the story line and the events that kept me reading page after page. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good book to read. This author has many other books that I have enjoyed and have been very satisfied with each one.
