Larson, author of the bestselling Seven Weeks to Sobriety, believes that many doctors misdiagnose nutritional imbalances as psychological disorders. She argues that most people who are depressed, fatigued or addicted to food, cigarettes or alcohol suffer from a deficiency of vitamins or amino acids that is only exacerbated by drugs like Xanax, Prozac and lithium. Larson provides checklists of symptoms, possible disorders and corrective formulas along with simple but thorough explanations of how the biochemistry works. She plausibly links biochemical emotional problems with the gradual shift in the American diet over the past 60 years toward sugary, carbohydrate-laden and processed foods, which disturb the body's insulin production and deprive the brain of much needed vitamins and nutrients. The author urges readers to seek out doctors to run lab tests in order to identify possible deficiencies, blood-sugar abnormalities and food allergies. Occasionally, Larson's advice gets lost in her sales pitch for her Health Recovery Center in Minnesota ("The nutrients used at Health Recovery Center are the best quality we can find"). Larson, a nutritionist and director of the Health Recovery Center in Minneapolis, contends that an imbalance of body chemicals often causes emotional problems and that making appropriate dietary changes will restore the brain's equilibrium. In addition to suggesting which foods to avoid or to eat, Larson provides lists of supplements to be taken on a daily basis and numerous questionnaires for detecting deficiencies. The long list of recommended supplements promotes extensive pill-popping, and there are regular reminders that those available from the Health Recovery Center at their 800-number are "the best quality." Larson's advice about the value of nutritional repair for depression and other emotional woes is sound, but with no clarification, her jargon is often confusing, e.g., "Symptoms indicating tyrosine or 1-phenylalanine is needed to increase norespinephine levels." RARE Information! Simple & Safe Cures for Mental Health Issues

Dr Mathews-Larsen has provided the world with a PRECIOUS GIFT in documenting her protocols in a book that anyone can access. This book SAVED my life, so of course there is no stronger recommendation possible. It's easy to read and follow. She explains how prescription drugs do more harm than good and were actually designed to mimic the action of nutrients! After more than a decade of career crashing, debilitating chronic fatigue, Dr Larsen's simple, safe nutrient protocols healed my poor sleep, normalized my moods, eliminated my anxiety, stabilized my blood sugar, gave me physical ENERGY & mental FOCUS and also many side bonuses like improving my eyesight and eliminating water retention. (Amino acids are MIRACULOUS!) She provides very RARE information about various nutritional deficiencies that cause depression, anxiety, and addictions, pointing to easy physical CURES for illnesses that seemed intractable.
This book is amazingly complete & thorough yet also concise. This a a PRACTICAL book on how to get better, not a book of theory. I love how she provides symptom checklists but also tells you where you can get lab testing done, too. I didn't use Dr Larsen's supplements, since I found them cheaper on iherb.com, which has the KRAZY-great prices on supplements! I recommend Anabol Naturals for the aminos (the blend is 99% the same as Dr Larsen's & is pharmaceutical grade.)
Dr Larsen's book provides enough information to heal yourself. However, in case you have pyroluria, I'd like to provide a few extra tips based on my experience. Because pyroluria causes zinc deficiency, you will automatically have copper toxicity. So you must realize that you will definitely go thru an uncomfortable healing crisis at some point as you detoxify excess copper. Google "copper toxicity" and you will find excellent information by Lawrence Wilson, MD. I also recommend googling "healing crisis."
In addition to this book, I also recommend "Nutrient Power" by Dr Bill Walsh. If you read these two books you will be on the forefront of the future of mental health. Incredible amounts of needless suffering is happening on this planet just because of simple nutrient deficiencies. Our bodies do not have pharmaceutical deficiencies...the human body is designed to run on amino acids, vitamins & minerals, and natural hormones, not prescription drugs! Once you heal yourself with Dr Larsen's protocols, please consider doing just a little bit to promote this information among your communities, because it truly is no less than life saving. This book changed my life!

I had no idea until I read this book that nearly all of my health problems and symptoms were related, genetic and a result of a nutrient deficiency. I spent more than 10 years being told by various doctors that they couldn't find anything wrong with me and yet I suffered from strange symptoms. After getting on Ms. Larson's vitamin program, these symptoms began to fade away...some almost overnight! I feel like a normal person again! I can't recommend this book enough. I was surprised that there are so many genetic disorders that can be easily helped with nutrient therapy. This book has helped me more than any other health book I've read.

An amazing find

Following the regimen found in this book has allowed me to be free of prescription anti-depressants and their side-effects for the first time in 15 years. It provides logical, clear prescriptions to treat anxiety, depression, anger and other emotional/physical conditions through diet, and natural food supplements. The treatment works, is affordable, and doesn't require an MD or prescription drugs. I recommend it highly.
