Richard and Karen Carpenter, as the Carpenters, are one of the best-selling music acts of all-time. Richard and Karen made their breakthrough in 1969 when, on 22nd April, they signed to A&M Records. Karen Was My Last "Star Crush"

Her voice had this warm intimacy one would expect of a girl who sang love songs. Even though most of their earlier material was Burt Bacharach ("Close To You") and the later stuff Paul Williams ("I Won't Last a Day Without You"). Actual in-house stuff like Richard's "Top Of the World" was all too rare. My ex used to diss Karen all the time--she preferred the druggie decadence of Janis Joplin or the slattern approach of rock's blowzy Martha Raye clone Bette Midler.
